Work could start as early as next year on a second
The project is a partnership involving Milton Keynes Council, The ExtraCare Charitable Trust and Milton Keynes Partnership. Work on the Village is expected to begin by 2010 and it could be open as early as 2012. With over 200 older people on the waiting list to purchase a property at Lovat Fields, and 20 Council referrals per month from people wishing to rent, partners are confident that demand for a second village is strong.
The plans were recently given the green light by members of Milton Keynes Council’s Development Control Committee. Cllr Rosemary Drewett, Cabinet Member responsible for social care on the council, welcomed the news. She said: “Our first Extracare village was so popular, it was massively oversubscribed before it opened. The only solution was to build a second one to meet the demand. Extracare offers a fantastic quality of life for older people who want to live independently, combining top notch facilities as well as support if they need it.”
John Lewis, Chief Executive of Milton Keynes Partnership, said: “In the current difficult economic climate it is very encouraging to see plans for this development progressing. This new scheme will provide much needed affordable homes for older people and create new jobs and these are both key aims of the MKP Business Plan.”
John Payne, Partnership Director for The ExtraCare Charitable Trust, comments: “Interest in our first, successful village demonstrates that there is strong demand for a new, pioneering approach to older peoples’ housing and support. I am delighted we can now offer a second village to meet this strong local need.”
