Enriched Activities Appeal

The Enriched Opportunities Programme at work

There are many excellent examples of the benefits to residents of the Locksmiths’ work.

Here are just two of these:

One resident with dementia who had serious nutritional problems and was under weight made excellent progress after intervention from the Locksmith. She was able to spend time with the lady, encouraging her to eat by identifying what foods she previously enjoyed, looking at other options such as finger foods and regular snacks and spending time with her during meals allowing her to take her own time.

Another resident with dementia had lost his wife at Christmas. He appeared to be going through the grieving process and was expressing this through anger and frustration. He was also very isolated and had never attended the social club. During the assessment process the Locksmith found out that he was a keen pool and darts player. She asked him to come down to the social club for a game of snooker with her. With encouragement he has now joined the darts and snooker teams and he also attends tai chi, bingo and other activities. He now appears much happier and sociable. The Locksmith feels this is because she had the time to find out about his interests and encourage him to participate, otherwise he may have declined into depression.

The Enriched Opportunities Programme is now fully established in all the study sites. The researchers are currently investigating the affects of the programme after twelve months of implementation. The results of this will be published in an interim report in mid 2008. The final report will be published in early 2009.

This important research has only been made possible through the kind support of many Charitable Trusts. One of the latest donations we have received is £15,000 from The Freemasons’ Grand Charity. To them, and all our other donors, a very sincere “thank you”. With now just under £60,000 left to raise in 2008, we are within sight of what seemed at one time to be an enormous target.
